Antiquity Away From The Crowds
Paestum was a beautiful city throughout antiquity, established by the Greeks around 600 BC. Today, there are still city walls which are largely intact, paved roads, an amphitheater, a Roman forum, and 3 fantastic Doric temples which speak of the past. The temples are in good condition and visitors are allowed to walk between the columns. There is also a national museum which houses exhibits found within the park. Paestum, or Poseidonia, as it was named by the Greeks, may be less famous than other Italian tourist sites, but very interesting in my opinion. A visit in June 2023 was not crowded at all: just a few international tourists, plus a handful of Italian school classes scattered over the expansive park. Very pleasant.
Visitors have to buy a ticket at the park entrance where tours and audio guides are available. Expect to spend 2-3 hours to see the most interesting spots. Public parking and a few bars and souvenir shops nearby.
During the summer a ticket for the Archeological Area and the Museum of Paestum was € 10.00 for adults and was valid for 3 days, and € 2.00 for people the age of 18-25.
Parco Archeologico di Paestum & Velia, Via Magna Grecia, 919-84047 Capaccio Paestum (SA).
The Park can be reached by train.
Please see my reports on Mozzarella Paestum and Osteria Arbustico Paestum, both nearby.
