Beauty, Comfort, Cordiality:
Outside the resort and in full view: the medieval Sassi area, San Pietro Caveoso Square* and Church, across the canyon the Murgia National Park with prehistoric caves. Stunning at any time of the day.
Inside Pianelle Resort: enthusiasm for the guest, genuine friendliness, beautiful design. The 17 habitations built and carved into the limestone show off Matera’s natural heritage to its best advantage.
Our deluxe room had 2 glass „windows“ in the floor giving view of the calcareous rock below. Impressive. To me Pianelle Resort was so exceptional that ist was worth the splurge and
the best choice for Matera.
Breakfast during our visit was partially buffet, partially a la carte, and of very good quality.
*scene of several films, such as 007 No Time To Die.
Tip:
Visit the attractive roof top terrace for panoramic views.
Parking and Transfer:
Traffic into the Sassi area is very restricted. In June of 2024 the resort organized 24h guarded parking outside the pedestrian zone, 2 very pleasant transfers, plus help with luggage, all for €40 (payment at the hotel).
Personal note on visiting Matera:
The town cannot be called crowd-free by any means. Early and mid June used to be fairly quiet, not so in 2024: the main streets in the Sassi area were packed with tourists. Matera, however, is so unique that skipping it on a trip to Southern Italy would be a loss. I suggest spring, late September or early October for a visit (summer months can be scorching hot). Good to know: many tourists come just for the day and don’t stay overnight. Evenings, therefore, tend to be a bit quieter and the illuminated Sassi district is magical.
