Superb Hazelnuts From Piedmont
The Tonda Gentile delle Langhe hazelnuts are considered the best in the world, valued for their low bitter content and their rich, complex flavor. Light roasting brings out the extraordinary aroma of the nuts. They are picked by hand in the groves of the beautiful Langhe region of Piedmont in Northwestern Italy, also renowned for its white truffle and excellent wines.
Altalanga Azienda Agricola produces this healthy hazelnut
organically and sells it in a very
friendly shop in the heart of Alba. The nuts are sold vacuum packed, and I am always amazed at how fresh and crunchy they stay this way for many months.
Processing of the hazelnuts is done in the back of the store. Shoppers are
welcome to visit the large room where nuts are sorted, roasted, peeled,
ground into pastes or flour, and packaged for shipment. A tour takes about
10-15 minutes depending on how interested you are. The employees are very
kind and forthcoming with information. They are proud of their work with good
reason.
Altalanga Azienda Agricola produces roasted, salted, unsalted, and chopped hazelnuts, hazelnut paste and flour, oil, cake, various spreads, truffles, hazelnuts covered with dark or milk chocolate, and a specialty called “Il Bacio di Dama”. There is also a hair and a face oil made of hazelnuts.
